Vultsubai, primarily known as "Vult", is very easy-going on the surface. He is extremely methodical and tends to over-analyze everything he says or does long before acting. Most of the time he's very disinterested in things going on around him and prefers not to get involved.

Roles and Relationships

  • Best friends with Gabe.
  • Close with Meryll, who he thinks of as a sister.
  • Long-term relationship with Shael.
  • Often fights/disagrees with Seraph.
  • Acquaintances with Alister, San, and Rey though they don't have much in common.

Interesting Facts or Quirks

  • Age: unknown.
  • Vultsubai is a shortened version of his full name.
  • He loves videogames, often spending all night playing them as he's desperate to keep his mind busy.
  • Vult is incredibly knowledgeable, though has long since passed the point of having a curious thirst for knowledge and is now to the point of being bored easily.
    • He doesn't have much interest in things going on with everybody else, preferring not to get involved. However, if things get out of hand he will step in to do what he can to put a stop to it.
  • He's always had a small crush on Meryll (which he would never allow himself to act on), and used to distance himself from Gabe because of it.
    • Now that Gabe and Meryll have become more serious, he's done his best to get to know Gabe more and the two have become close friends.
  • Forces himself to sleep as little as possible without physically/mentally harming himself, sometimes catching naps when nobody is around or everybody else is sleeping.
    • Has very little memory of his life as a human. When he sleeps, his past comes to him in painful flashbacks, taking the form of vivid nightmares.
    • Tato often watches him sleep, occasionally interfering with his dreams.1
  • He is rather cynical and pessimistic, a bit of a pushover, and a sore loser (and a very impolite braggart winner).
  • The tattoo on his chest is a religious symbol (Morrow).
  • Favorite colors: orange and brown.
  • Music taste: metal, anything that drowns out the ability to think.
    • Typical playlist includes: Metallica, 36 Crazyfists, Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, Godsmack, Tool.
  • Readers often misspell his name as "Volt" or "Vault".
  • Vult has a Twitter.

History

Bandit's Landing
When introduced, Vult has been living alone on an island off the coast of Khador for what seems to have been a very long time. Judging by his appearance Talia assumes he is a dragonspawn, which he confirms and elaborates on (explaining that the dragon has long since been dead) but doesn't say how long it's been since he was no longer human. (more at the bottom of the page)

Beneath the Midnight Sun
Vult's history is not specified in the separate storyline.

Expanded History

!!SPOILERS!! (highlight at your own risk!)

Vult was once a human named Helmere who lived during the occupation of the Orgoth. His father (a Khadoran soldier) died during the rebellion, leaving Helmere the only male in his household. He worked hard to help his mother raise his two younger sisters, and spent his spare time training to become a soldier when he was old enough so he could support his family and follow in his father's footsteps.

After being in the military for several years, Helmere worked his way up to the point where he controlled a small platoon of men. An Iosan woman was assigned to his platoon. She was an expert sniper and Helmere was attracted to her, and the two of them became extremely close. Without warning or explanation, she left the military after about six months and returned to Ios. Occasionally she would return to Khador to visit him, and every time he would beg her to stay. She would refuse, stating plainly that she would never want to live among humans (at the time, there was still a significant amount of unrest between humans and elves). This repeated over the course of two years, before she came to visit again after a long absence. He begged her for a final time to stay with him so they could start a family. She became angry, telling him that she would rather die. She also told him she'd been pregnant with his child, but rather than give birth to a half-human, she had killed it. Horrified, he kicked her out and spiraled into a deep depression.

It was at this time that his superiors presented him with a high risk mission. He accepted blindly, not caring if he or his men returned alive. The mission turned out to be for a retrieval of a dragon anthac that had been discovered within the control of the Orgoth. Upon arrival, Helmere and his men were assaulted by enemy troops on similar missions for their own country. In a desperate attempt to save his men Helmere sacrificed his soul to bond with the anthac, his body transforming into a powerful brass dragon. The dormant soul within the anthac raged and went out of control, killing everybody within miles. Helmere lost all memories of his life prior to that point, but the remnants of his human soul fought for control and he fled, eventually resting at an island far to the west of Khador under Orgoth occupation. He stayed there for the next four hundred years, honing his control over the evil inside of him, frightening away anybody who happened to discover his hiding place.
